Broward County S.P.O.T. Program – Low Cost Spay and Neuter Program

Thursday, November 16th, 2006

The S.P.O.T. Program offers $10 sterilization (spaying/neutering/fixing) of cats and dogs for Broward County pet owners who earn low-to-moderate incomes. Eligibility is based on the number of people in the household and yearly income compared to the Broward County median income. For example, a household of four with a yearly income of $60,200 would qualify for the program.

Pet owners can choose from over 20 veterinary clinics and nonprofit organizations to perform the surgery. It is funded by a $2 surcharge on animal license tags issued that goes into a special account to pay the veterinarians a reduced fee to perform the surgeries.

The goals are to increase the number of pets spayed and neutered, reduce the number of unwanted cats and dogs born, and reduce the number of unwanted animals euthanized.

Why Spay and Neuter?

Fit Your Pet — Fix the Problems — You will have less problems when you spay/neuter your pets. These benefits include:

* Improved health
* Longer life
* Reduced medical bills
* No unwanted puppies and kittens
* Less biting
* Less aggressiveness
* Less roaming
* Less spraying and marking
* Less fighting among pets that live together

Reduce the Number of Pets Euthanized (killed)

There is a serious pet overpopulation crisis. About 30,000 dogs and cats were euthanized in Broward County last year and 6 million dogs and cats are euthanized in the country every year because there aren’t enough homes for all these pets. The number of healthy dogs and cats euthanized every year would be greatly reduced if more pet owners spay or neuter their animals.
